Description	PMA President Theodore Hyatt believed that young men should attend school to obtain an education, not to play ball. However, in 1879, he approved the start of a football team but restricted it only to on-campus games. In 1888, the team was unbeaten, untied, and unscored upon, all without leaving campus. Much of the the team's long and successful history is described in "Football: The story of 100 years." An early spectator of football at PMC probably witnessed a sporting event that more closely resembled rugby than what is currently recognized as football. Games were intramural, rules loosely enforced, and players wore very little if any protective clothing. In the fall of 1879, the first official intercollegiate football team at PMC was formed. That year the team played Swarthmore, the University of Pennsylvania, and, as one cadet put it, whoever we could inveigle into coming to us. In these early years, sport teams at PMC were not allowed to play away games.
