Description	As the 19th century gave way to the 20th, athletics at PMC became more widely recognized as a critical component of a cadets development. Before 1904, athletics was initiated and managed by an association of students operating with the permission of the President and was generally viewed as an ancillary activity. In 1904, however, an institutional College Athletic Board was established and began fostering sport as an official PMC activity. With this new emphasis, several athletic teams gained wider acceptance, including basketball. In 1905, PMC officially initiated basketball as an organized sport. Games were generally played against local rivals in the early years, with Delaware College being chief among them.
